Since my last Intake Issue, my interview with Katie Gavin (MUNA) has been published. We chatted about creativity, mental health, her solo project, and empowering the next wave of queer artists. She’s one of my favorite songwriters and musicians ever, so this was a dream for me; I hope you enjoy it!
The apocalypse is still doing its thing and fascism is ever-present, but the weather in New York is finally getting warm enough to not have to wear a puffer jacket! Rejoice! Defrost!
Anyway, here are some things I’ve enjoyed reading, watching, witnessing, and listening to.
Reading
Flâneuse: Women Walk the City in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice, and London by Lauren Elkin. I’ll be solo-traveling to Paris for my birthday in May (aka having my Francis Ha moment) and felt like it was an appropriate time to pick up this one.
Reading the Waves: A Memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch. "I believe our bodies are carriers of experience.” Lidia never misses.
Art on My Mind by bell hooks.
“Can reading help treat your depression?” in Dazed, which argues that the act of reading is a healing tool.
This Creative Independent interview with an artist I admire, Gab Bois.
Can Zohran Mamdani Really Win? in The Nation. “The iconography of New York City is tied to the fight for working-class New Yorkers who made it mean something. That’s the commitment of this campaign.”
Watching
Severance, of course. Episode seven of season two, “Chikhai Bardo,” is some of the best TV I’ve ever seen.
The new White Lotus season.
Conclave. This movie may have healed my religious (Catholic) trauma.
Closer. I agree with this review 👇🏻
Who is Luigi Mangione? on HBO. It attempts to explore who he really is, although I didn’t learn anything new that hasn’t been posted on TikTok already.
Timothée Chalamet’s buttery look.
Witnessing
Liberation, a play now showing at Roundabout Theatre which centers around a group of women who meet in an Ohio school basement in the 70s to raise their consciousness. Heartbreakingly timely, it asks a central question: why are women still in oppressive positions?
Lucy Dacus performing in a Brooklyn church. Holy, indeed.
Going to the New York City Ballet for the first time.
Nitehawk’s Annual Oscar Party. One of the best Brooklyn events of the year.
- ’s first event, Stage Break.
The Natural History Museum, which I somehow had never been to before previously. The origin of our species was my favorite exhibit.
Subway sunsets.
Listening
HAIM’s new song, Relationships. I can’t stop listening to it on repeat.
The Giver by Chappell Roan.
Music To Refine To. Recommended by my friend
. I listened to it out of curiosity, and can attest it helps with concentration. Why not lean into the late-stage capitalism of it all, huh?
Etc.
My pug Hamlet turned four and I turned my apartment into a Parisian cafe.
For the party, I made this Chocolate Guinness Cake recipe.
Rule of Thirds in Greenpoint.
A large humidifier for my room with a built-in essential oil diffuser.
Fresh-squeezed orange juice.
Do you have any book/movie/music/art recs? Drop ‘em below in the comments.
Ahh yes Relationships is on constant repeat for me too. So grateful for a new HAIM single 🙏
Hamlet is an icon 🖤 and ahh forever playing that Severance mix lol
